Undercoverwear

2012 New England USSSA Hall of Fame Team of Distinction

Steve Crampton formed the Undercoverwear softball team in 1990. It was an all-star team made up of New England players, based out of Wilmington, MA. Steve's hometown. The team had a national schedule, which included trips to 17 states and Canada. They also attended many USSSA tournaments, which was a great way for them to make a name for themselves. As the team played in New England tournaments, Steve always kept his eye on opposing players that could help improve the Undercoverwear team. During the first year, Steve got sponsorship from athletic companies such as Reebok, Bike, and Worth Sports.

The team's first year was very successful, ending in a 60-20 record, winning two tournaments in Canada, and finishing in the top 5 AAA tournaments. The team added to their list of achievements by finishing their first year as 4-2, at the Class A worlds.

In the following winter, Steve started to recruit even better players and acquired more sponsorship. He also stepped up the schedule to many major and AA tournaments, including men's major in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Dallas, Texas, Detroit, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio. When the time came to go to the Class A National Championships at San Clemente, California, the team was not intimidated by any of the opposing teams because they had been playing against AA and major teams all season. Heading into this championship, team Undercoverwear was ranked as the Class A team in the country.

The results of this championship were something that rarely happens. A New England team, competing nationally with players from warmer cli-mates, came away with the biggest prize of all, a national championship. Fifteen players, four coaches, and two batboys traveled the United States from Massachusetts to California during a 90 game tournament competition, finishing 79-21. Their journey ended with an extraordinary come-from -behind victory out of the losers bracket, defeating Showtime Post Oil from Sacramento, California, who gave Undercoverwear their only defeat in their third game on Saturday. The Undercoverwear softball team continued to win Sunday and Monday, winning seven consecutive games in a row. Six out of these seven games were played on Monday. They finished 9-1 for the weekend, and beat competitor Showtime Post Oil twice on Monday night.
