Oneila "Nellie" Gray

Female Player

Onelia “Nellie” Gray has played USSSA softball for more than 25 years. She has played on Tyra Club Phillies, Kent County Merchants, Fitzpatrick’s Pub, Echelon Bar and Grill, S&S Landscaping, Fair Warning, Drama/DH Hitting, and A.T. Cross and OSS Apparel.

Nellie played in her first USSSA Labor Day Weekend Tourney with Tyra in Rochester, NY in 1983 and has since competed in the USSSA Rhode Island, Northeast National and World Tournaments at the B, C and D level almost every year for the last 30 years. Her teams have regularly finished in the top 3 at State Tournaments. They have also finished as high as top 3 in the Nationals and top 4 in the Worlds. The awards and achievements she has received are very rewarding to her, but not as important as the overall team finish.

Nellie's list of individual awards:

  • 1995 RI Classic Women’s Open Tournament MVP
  • 2011 Women’s C National All-Tournament Team
  • 2013 Mother’s Day Madness Tournament MVP
  • 2013 Compete for a Cure Tournament MVP
  • 2013 Women’s C National All-Tournament Team
  • 2015 RI Women’s State Championship All-Tournament Team
  • 2015 Women’s C National All-Tournament Team

Nellie has made so many great memories over the years. For her to be able to take the field for so many years and to be able to perform at such a high competitive level each and every year has been a thrill every time she takes the field.

“I have had the pleasure of playing my career with so many great athletes that the personal awards were never as important. I have been lucky enough to call so many ladies my teammates and my friends that I have gone on to be considered some of the best to ever play in New England and so many of them are in the NEHOF. I have been blessed to share a dugout with players who have set the standard for women’s softball across New England.”
