Charles Vermette

Special - Presented by Jim Jackson

Chuck has been associated with USSSA for approximately 23 years. He has served as assigning officer for the East Providence Umpires Association for 21 years. During this time he has assigned umpires for approximately 31,500 league games and 4500 tournament games.

Chuck has also done some umpiring over the years. One specific play comes to mind when asked to describe the most memorable event to occur while participating in a USSSA program. "In 2001 I was the plate umpire. It was during the 4th inning when the catcher put the tag on a sliding runner and immediately reached up a "tagger" on the following runner for an inning ending double play. It was the first time in my 53 years as a baseball/softball umpire. Ironically, the same play happened a week later during a church league contest."

Chuck believes softball is a great game to play, as well as umpire, as long as it remains "fun" the players and ump. He notes that "players seem to pick on the rookie umpires, so to speak, which has a tendency to discourage some potentially good umpires."

In addition to Chuck being inducted to the USSSA Hall of Fame tonight, he is also an honorary inductee of East Providence Senior High school Hall of Fame. Chuck was a mathematics teacher, math department chairman, assistant principal and principal in the East Providence School Department. Chuck has also been inducted into the RI Baseball coaches Hall of fame.

"I have assigned umpires to numerous national and regional tournaments, most of which have been on short notice. All to the aforementioned assigning accomplishments could never have been possible if it weren't for a great group of umps in the East Providence Umpires association. As the saying goes; it's a real team effort"
