Charles Bigelow

Umpire - Presented by Roman Ferguson

Chuck has been associated with softball, in some capacity, since 1962.

As a player with AJ Renzi Plastics, Tandem Construction, Smith’s Auto (Leominster) and Ronnies Wrecks (Worcester), his career spans over 33 years before he retired in 1995. Of the 33 years as a player, 17 were under the USSSA program. Some highlights of his career are results of playing in these tournaments:

1978-AJ Renzi Plastics-State Class “A”- Champs

1978-AJ Renzi Plastics-Eastern World Class “A”

1979-AJ Renzi Plastics-Eastern World Class “A”

1980-AJ Renzi Plastics-Eastern World Class “A”

1986-Ronnies Wrecks-40+ Masters World Tournament

1987-Ronnies Wrecks-40+ Masters World Tournament

1988-Ronnies Wrecks-40+ Masters World Tournament

In 1978 Chuck was named to the Massachusetts State Class “A” USSSA All-State tournament team. He states that his greatest softball thrill, as a player, would be “Playing in the World Tournaments at all levels.”

Chuck has been a Massachusetts USSSA Umpire for 12 years. His is currently an active umpire and has been the Massachusetts Central Area Umpire-In-Chief since 1997.

What comes to mind as some of the most exciting times for Chuck as an umpire might be officiating the World Series tournaments over the past few years. He goes on to say, “They are the most recent, but after 41 years I’m sure there have been a lot that have been pushed aside and stored away. Too numerous to list, but not enough to keep me from coming back for more.”

Charles has attended 9 consecutive National Umpires Clinic’s, beginning in 1994. His tournament history include the following:

19 Men’s NIT-all levels
11 Men’s State Tournaments
7 Northeast Regional tournaments
4 World Tournaments
4 Qualifiers
2 New England Championships
2 “Open” Tournaments
2 Eastern Regionals
1 Invitational

Although Chuck would like to see improvements on how new equipment is evaluated and used in the local USSSA programs, he offers this comment:

“ I have been involved in the game of softball since 1962 as a player, umpire, director etc. and associated with USSSA in some capacity since 1978 and I’m still here…’Nuff said”
