Alan Brien

Manager - Presented by Christopher Santucci

Alan Brien sponsored USSSA softball teams for 20 years. His team, Brien Oil started as a D team in the early 80’s and worked its way up to eventually merge with other New England powerhouses to form a AA team. Those teams include Pierce Construction/Brien Oil, Brien Oil/Spalding, Midas Touch/Checking/Brien Oil, Checking/Tiger/Brien Oil, TPS/Checking/Tiger/Brien Oil/Air Transat, and Laservision.

Alan used to rent a van so that his team could make the 2.5 hour drive to Vernon, CT and play doubleheaders in the weeknight league. They wanted to play the best and the league play was like playing a tournament game every time they stepped on the field. His team looked forward to the ride knowing that they would battle every time they made the trip to Vernon.
Alan really enjoyed the progression his teams made starting as a D team and working their way up to AA. He is proud to have over 50 first place finishes by his team before they merged. Some of those are listed below.

1985 Hopkinton, Palmer, Clinton, Derry, Portsmouth

1986 Marlboro, Palmer, Clinton, Boxborough, Lowell

1987 Palmer, Uxbridge, Yarmouth, Clinton, Salem

1988 Agawam, Everett, Quincy, Northborough, Haverhill

1989 Hampton Beach, Salem, Derry, Agawam, Palmer, Uxbridge

1990 Reading, Peabody, Merrimack, Salem, Derry, East Providence

1991 Agawam, Palmer, Cumberland, Merrimack, Derry

1992 State Champs in MA and NH

Alan believes that sponsors have become a huge part of the game at the upper levels. They have provided the means for players to travel across the country to seek the best competition. He is very proud of the fact that the local players were able to move up through the ranks. He feels he was able to contribute to their success by providing a solid team for them to hone their skills and work on their craft.

“I love the game of softball and I love competition. The USSSA provided the best competition we could find, even if it meant we had to travel. I loved playing against the best teams in the country every weekend. The USSSA opened the door for my guys to play against the best players in the country. The organization has always been first class in my eyes.”
